Memorial News

1st April 2022
This week we are saddened by the news of Steve Coss passing. Steve was the driving force behind building the memorial. The initial design and location of the memorial both came from Steve. He was also part of the build team and volunteered countless hours to the project. His eye for precision and artistic flare mixed with design will forever live in our memorial and will be a reminder of his talents, dedication and hard work.

PLANTING DAY
Today students from our memorial team planted out the garden beds and surrounding area. We were lucky enough to work with defence force personnel from Edinburgh. They have been doing a fantastic job helping build the memorial and support the project over the last 2 weeks. We would also like to especially thank Rik Banjo and his crew for all the time, effort, money and expertise they have put into building our memorial. Soldiers from Woodside Barracks also brought a Bushmaster troop carrier for the students to climb on and look at. Nicola Barnes brought native plants, donated by Kersbrook Landcare Group, and guided the students on where and how to plant them. We thank her for her passion, time and expertise. We would also like to thank the Adelaide Hills Council. In particular we would like to acknowledge Steve Flinn who has been unwavering in his support for this project.

A milestone event took place today with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Peramangk Elder, Ivan ‘Tiwu’ Copley. The traditional cleansing ceremony is a significant event in preparing the land for excavation and building. Permission has now been given by the Peramangk for construction to begin. The audience was moved and honoured to have Eric Bogle play his famous song "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda". The event was attended by staff and students of Bridgewater Primary School, Mayor Bill Spragg, Paula Dabovich (Research candidate, University of Adelaide), Adelaide Hills councilors, members from The Stirling RSL and community members.
